Jonathan, andropause symptoms
Jonathan was a 48 year old client who presented to the clinic, after his wife, Marcia, noted significant improvements after starting BHRT with Brookfield Optimal Health Clinic, previously. Jonathan reported he wanted to be able to keep up with Marcia, he was continually exhausted, depressed and unhappy with recent abdominal weight gain, in spite of weight lifting 3 x weekly and running 2 x per week. Jonathan completed the Aging Mens Symptoms Rating Scale, with a 17 as the lowest possible score and an 85 reflecting the worst or most severe possible score. Jonathan initially scored a 72 on the symptom scale. Jonathan noted the following symptoms as severe or extremely severe: sleep problems, increased fatigue, nervousness, anxiety, exhaustion, decreased muscle strength, depressive mood, decrease in number or quality of morning erections and a feeling of having passed one’s peak. Other symptoms were noted to be mild to moderate. In the 4 years prior to his visit, Jonathan had tried three different antidepressant medications including an SSRI, trazodone and Wellbutrin and from his family doctor. He found he could not tolerate the trazodone which was prescribed for sleep, as he felt it made him too groggy and tired the next day. He found the SSRI caused intolerable sexual dysfunction and stopped this. While he found the Wellbutrin to be a bit helpful with mood and energy and continued to take it, he still noted significant difficulties with his mental health. He used both Viagra and Cialis for erectile dysfunction which he found to be somewhat helpful for sexual function, but felt his depressed and anxious mood continued to be a barrier to intimacy.
After 6 weeks of testosterone replacement therapy, Jonathan reported he felt like anew man, felt 20 years younger and felt better than he had in a long time. He reported his relationships were more enjoyable and fulfilling, and that the cloud of anxiety and depression had lifted. He reported significant improvement in sleep and decision making capacity at work. He reported that he no longer required Cialis or Viagra for ED. When the symptom rating scale was performed, he noted no symptoms were moderate, severe or extremely severe, and scored 22 on the symptom rating scale.
